Chapter 6 - few phrases
FAITH IN FUTURE GRACE VS. PRIDE
"Humility is not a popular human trait in the modern world. The basic reason for this is not hard to find: humility can only survive in the presence of God. We can expect to find humility applauded in our society about as often as we find God applauded."
"Trusting God and being arrogant are opposites - Prov 28:25. That's why Stephen Charnock said: "A proud faith is as much a contradiction as a humble devil."
"Belief in Jesus means coming to Jesus for the satisfaction of all that God is for us in him. Belief is not merely an agreement with facts in the head; it is also an appetite for God in the heart, which fastens on Jesus for satisfaction."
"Unbelief is a turning away from God and his Son in order to seek satisfaction in other things. Pride is a turning away from God specifically to take satisfaction in self. So pride is one specific form of unbelief. And it is antidote is the wakening and strengthening of faith in future grace. In chapter 17 we will see that covetousness is turning away from God, usually to find satisfacion in things. In chapter 27 we will see that lust is turning away from God to find satisfaction in sex. We will see that bitterness is turning away from God to find satisfaction in revenge (chapter 21). Impatience is turning away from God to find satisfaction in your own uninterrupted plan of action (chapter 13). Anxiety, misplaced shame, and despondency are various conditions of the heart when these efforts of unbelief miscarry (chapters 3, 10, 24). But deeper than all these forms of unbelief is the unbelief of pride, because self-determination and self-exaltation lie behind all these other sinful dispositions. Every turning from God - for anything - presumes a kind of autonomy or independence that is the essence of pride."
"The battle against pride is the battle against unbelief."
